Insurance Day London Market Awards 2007

EXCELLENCE across the whole range of the insurance industry in London was rewarded on Thursday 6th December 2007 at the seventh Insurance Day London Market Awards.

Hosted by TV commentator and former England rugby star Brian Moore, the evening saw a record number of guests gather at London’s Grosvenor House for the gala evening.

Broking company, Cooper Gay, picked up the coveted Company of the Year accolade, having impressed the judges with its strong growth and support for the London market, to which it has successfully brought new business from a variety of mature and untapped locations. The same achievements persuaded the judges to reward Cooper Gay in the Broking Team of the Year category as well.

On the underwriting side, Amlin’s syndicate 2001 came out on top. It was the judges’ unanimous choice, reflecting its stand-out performance in its market, strong financial performance and robust attitude to managing risk.

This year’s Insurance Day London Market Awards also saw the welcome return of the Claims Team of the Year award, recognising the important role that the claims function plays in today’s risk world. The winner was Beazley, which demonstrated an enviable track record in handling complex claims and a clear structure highlighting the relationship between underwriting and claims professionals.

At a time when training and skills development remains high on the agenda of the industry’s leaders across the market, Insurance Day felt it was important to recognise excellence among the future leaders.

This year’s Young Underwriter of the Year was Ace European Group’s Tom Hillier, who impressed the judges with his strong underwriting and client service approach, as well as his knowledge of an increasingly important sector of the market - environmental risk.

A familiar face was recognised as the Young Broker of the Year. Marsh’s Man Cheung was highly commended at last year’s ceremony but his achievements over the past 12 months have been even more impressive, prompting the judges to demand that he be given the 2007 award.

Chaucer was the winner of the In-house Actuarial Team award, having impressed the judges with an entry that showed it had successfully integrated the actuarial function with all areas of the business and has championed actuarial causes throughout the London market.

The evening’s most poignant awards went to Chubb Insurance Company of Europe, which was the winner in the Charitable Initiative of the Year category. The judges were extremely keen to reward an initiative that was born out of a very personal tragedy but yet has prompted an inspirational change in attitude among the company’s staff, as well as raising a lot of money for a deserving charity.

In the Risk Manager of the Year category, Gary Marshall of Polestar was the judges’ choice, in recognition of both the prominent role that he has played in the European risk-management community for some time and the success he has achieved within his own company, spearheading a number of projects particularly addressing the issue of environmental responsibility.

The Insurance Workplace picked up Technological Initiative of the Year in a highly competitive category for an initiative that has been developed with the market and for the market, addressing a very real need.
